The Binic occupies a relatively small footprint that is most appropriate and functional for our constantly shrinking urban living spaces.

About Ionna Vautrin

“I try to design everyday objects in a way that is simple and obvious, yet surprising,” explains designer Ionna Vautrin. “I conceive them in a playful and colorful spirit, as a warm and familiar presence through both geometric and organic forms, and intuitive and functional uses.”

Ionna was born in 1979 in France, and studied at L’École de design Nantes Atlantique. After graduating in 2002, she worked for as with some of Europe’s leading design firms, including Camper in Spain, George J. Sowden in Italy, and Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec in France.

In 2010, Ionna was awarded with the Grand Prix de la Création de la Ville de Paris (Grand Prize for Creation of the City of Paris) for the Binic light, which was produced by Foscarini. The table lamp also earned Ionna an Wallpaper design award in 2011, and a Compasso d’Oro in 2014.

“[The Binic] is made in a nautical style, which draws inspiration specifically from the “manches à air” (windsocks) on the decks of boats,” Ionna explains. “A year later, this small light that looks like a lighthouse flooded the market! It immediately was met with great enthusiasm by the public and the press. This project was a turning point in my young career.”

In early 2011, Ionna opened her own studio in Paris, where she has collaborated with brands like Foscarini, Moustache, Kvadrat, Christian Dior, Sancal, Super-ette, Lexon, and Serralunga.
